  1. It will depend to some extent on the species: plants are generally more tolerant to chromosome rearrangements and disruptions, but there are limitations. In general, the more extensive the damage the more likely the process of meiosis will abort. This is especially true if the chromosome damage is enough to prevent crossing over. To the best of my knowledge, any case where recombination is suppressed the end result is sterility.
