Just curious cause there is less moving parts like a bolt action rifle which are considerably more accurate over autos.

  1. I habve spoken to people whose opinion I trust that say that one way to make the SKS more accurate is to switch it to bolt action

One of these people has built a verifiable MOA rifle from a Yugo SKS

The gas valve shut off by itself did little it was just one smal part of the equation

    Oh

And report the girl who wants the asker to shoot himself and the boy that is so proud of his flatulence

The only way to get rid of the point whoring children is for more than one person to report them

Let them know that coming here will cost them points

    -------------------

By changing to bolt action I was referring to cutting off the gas supply and making the gun a defacto straight pull bolt action

    Sorry for the confusion

  2. It will be a bit more accurate or based on the type of gas it might jsut be the same

  3. No, I heard that story years ago and tried it on my M1A. There is no appreciable gain in accuracy with the valve closed.

  4. It will shoot a little more accurate but I don't think it's practical unless you were wanting to really show off groups.

The SKS is more accurate than most of the assult rifles and ranch rifles out there anyway and you could really "stick it to someone" that way if that's the goal.

But most SKSs with proper optics will get around 2" at 100 yards with good ammo anyway. Irons around 3-4".

What else do you need? It's an accurate rifle

  5. The accuracy advantage is not worth the abuse the receiver will get from the bolt moving at higher velocity

  6. Probably not enough to notice. The bullet is out of the barrel before the action starts to cycle anyway.

  7. No. SKS’s like the Yugo with the grenade launcher gas switch was designed to divert all the gas pressure from the light grenade launching round to launch the grenade farther. If you look at the gas port on the barrel you will see it’s very near the end of the barrel, So by the time the bullet reaches the gas port the bullet is well on its way. Shutting off the valve on a Yugo will only add a tiny insignificant amount of velocity and have about zero affect on accuracy. In fact all it will do is cause failure to eject the empty casing.

Accuracy is (other than the shooter) all about the rifling, head space, barrel crown and type of ammo.

  8. It will do nothing to improve accuracy.

Accuracy for bolt actions are better because the round is securely in place, were as the semi-auto bolt does a sloppy job of it and each round is slightly off of where it should be. The bolt action eliminates this sloppy alignment.

As said by beeds the condition of the rife is important for accuracy. If the rifling are worn out, head space worn, and the muzzle crown has been damaged accuracy will suffer. Vangion is right; if you change it to a bolt action it will be more accurate. But why spend that sort of money and time on a cheap gun?

  9. Marginally so. Turning off the gas is really a throw back from when they used to have rifle grenades that were launched from the muzzle using a blank cartridge.

Accuraccy was never the goal of the gas cut off.
