Question:

Will global warming affect Anatartica and if it were to ever all melt how would sea levels be affected?

Everyone knows the northern ice cap is melting more and more and Greenland will put a lot of water into the ocean causing lots of flooding in nearly seal level areas. However, will Antarctica follow suit?

MAIN QUESTION:

If Both Greenland and Antarctica were to melt how far would sea levels rise?

P.S. No posting about how global warming is a hoax as it defeats the purpose of the question.

  1. the sea levels would be the same.

global warming is a hoax, sorry i had to

  2. http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=Antarti...

  3. Antartica WILL follow Arctic. Imagine how much ice will melt and add up to the seas and oceans. Let' s also face the fact that many places, landmarks, and especially, lowlands will be underwater .

  4. I believe global warming to be real, but that doesn't mean humans are causing it.  Anyway, much of the data I have heard says Antartica is actually gaining volumes of ice...

  5. Has not affected Antarctica so far? -------- however if Greenland AND the South pole melted completely-- sea levels would rise about 20 feet-- but Antarctic ice is actually increasing.

http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2...  this is probably the worst case scenario possible.

  6. water whether liquid or solid occupies an equal amount of space

  7. It probably would make sea levels rise.  It's kinda like when a piece of ice melts in your glass.  I heard from a science teacher that at one time Anatartica was full of plant life because about every 6,000- 7,000 years, the earth tilts closer to the equator.  I'm not sure if that's true or not but that's what my 11th grade teacher told his class.   Hope this helps:))

  8. well, I've heard that in about twenty years time, when the sea levels will rise excessively according to a bunch of scientists, places like London will be completely flooded, because not even the London flood gate barriers will be able to stop it. sorry if this sounds unconventional, but it might be something a little less dramatic than what happened in the film 'the day after tomorrow'.

  9. global warming is a hoax. the question is without purpose other than to promote fear mongering.

Ice in a glass melting causes no increase in water level.

All of the northern ice cap melting would cause no change in ocean water level.

It is physically impossible for both the northern and southern icecaps to melt at the same time.  Summer never happens in both places at the same time.

The ocean level does not rise in spring and summer, so why would it rise with a 1 degree change is average world temperatures.

Temperatures change more than 10 degrees between day and night, if the world was going to come to an end because of a small temperature change, it would happen every day.

    global warming is a hoax.

You cannot honestly believe these people can change the weather.  They do not understand the simplest natural events.

  10. If both Greenland and Antarctica were to melt, sea levels would rise.  Ocean currents would be changing, temperatures would be changing, floods would occur, and parts of the world would enter an ice age.

  11. Check out:  http://www.the-cryosphere-discuss.net/1/...

    Reconstructing the glacier contribution to

    sea-level rise back to 1850

If you can follow the math you can do the calculation.

  12. Antarctica has never melted.  "Global Warming" is not reaching the Antarctic.

The ice at the South Pole has gained mass every year its been measured.

  13. Yes it will. sea levels would be affected because Antarctica is mainly mostly made of ice and when ice melts it turns to water.

  14. West Antarctic Ice Sheet: 64.8 meter sea level rise

East Antarctic Ice Sheet: 8.1 meters

    Antarctic Penninsula: 0.46 meters

    Greenland: 6.55 meters

All other ice caps, glaciers, etc.: 0.45 meters

Total: Potentially an 80.3 meter sea level rise.

However, Antartica is currently warming at a slower rate than the rest of the planet.  This is an expected result, primarily because the southern hemisphere contains so much ocean volume (whereas the northern has more land).
