Will global warning kill us all or will people be able to do something about it? (Give me your honest opinion)

don't worry!  "global  warming" (notice the quotes) is not real.  Gore couldn't be president, so he had to find some other way  to get on TV!  so, no worries, we'll all be fine and live to be a 100!

I have a rather different viewpoint than most people in here (on either side of the issue) and also a different viewpoint than my colleagues (I'm a climate scientist).  I absolutely believe that global warming is real (the evidence is overwhelming if you're scientifically literate) and if we had an infinite supply of fossil fuels I think that we probably would go on burning them until global warming completely screws up the world as we know it.

However, I don't think that will come to pass, because I believe that fossil fuel reserves are vastly overstated.  Almost every country that produces oil produces less than they did in the past.  For the US the peak was 1970--that was pre-Alaska! Even if we open up ANWR it will still be on the decline.  The US and China both are supposed to have vast reserves of coal, but I think that is deceptive.  There is a lot of coal that the US will never mine because it's too dirty, it's too hard to mine, it's too costly.  China's reserves never seem to go down, even though they are using coal at an ever increasing rate.  They'll run out too, or decide that it's not worth it to have air you can't breath and hundreds of miners die every year in accidents.

So, honestly, I don't think we have enough coal and oil to s***w things up really badly.  In a couple decades we'll probably be below even the Kyoto Protocol, so I think global warming will be halted at some higher level than today's, but probably at a level we can live with.

The problem will be that the world's population will demand more and more energy, and it's not going to come from oil, coal, nuclear power, or wind.  That leaves solar and biomass, which are possible, but would require gigantic commitments of investment and area.  It will be interesting.

Gore is a clown.   He knows less about weather and climate than he does about politics.  The Nobel prize was a joke and he was capitializing on a trend in our society for his own personal gain.

GW doesn't exist. Don't be a fool who blindly believes that the far left are all about saving cute animals. ESPECIALLY AL GORE.  His movie has been ripped to shreds for all the inaccuracies. There is an entire industry based around this latest climate scare (there is one every 30 years or so, either warming or cooling).

The global warming religion likes to use the National Academy of Science report as their bible, but this is bias and funded by special interest groups. Look carefully at the facts. For example, it states that temperatures have risen 1.4 degrees since the beginning of the 20th century. This is true. However, temps have NOT increased in the last 10 years. You'll notice that, in the 2008 report, none of the graphs contain data past 2000... sketchy, huh? It's because this defies the rising temp theory.

Even though the polar bears have now been put on the endangered species list, it is because they changed the rules. The population has actually tripled in the last 30 years. The ice shelfs are the among the highest seen in 30 years.

No matter what environmentalists say (or how they say it), there is no evidence that man is causing global warming. They will use sleight of hand to try and get you, but don't be a sucker. For example, notice how NO commercials say anything about "global warming" anymore? The use the words "climate change" now. That's because environmentalists realize that time is becoming limited on this scare, but they can use the words "climate change" and keep us afraid that we're going to die, whether it be from warming, cooling, etc.

For your own good, the good of the nation, and yes, the planet, you should be VERY skeptical. Look carefully at the facts and the language. Environmentalists are not always keeping the green of nature in mind. There is a lot of money to be made in this hugely expanding industry.

Even if you are someone who will never believe that global warming doesn't exist, think about this... it will cost 29 trillion dollars to fight this threat of sketchy (and special interest funded) "science" along with ruin our economy. Know how much it will take to feed the entire human population for the next 100 yrs? 7 trillion.

Still think we should be making public policies and spend all that money? Then do one thing for me before you call your local congressman: Name one thing that the government hasn't screwed up.

i am currently at the end of an environmental science class and honestly people can do something about global warming. by limiting the amount of ghg's (green house gases) being put into the atmosphere we can bring global warming down. some simple things that can be done is skip the steak. i know i k now. steak tastes really good but with all the cows needed to make all the steaks that everybody wants, too much energy is wasted and too many ghg's get released into the environment. cows f**t a lot. farts are methane. methane is a green house gas. too many equals too  warm. by planting a tree you can suck up some of the ghg's. and even though this sounds ridiculous you can plant a bamboo fence. bamboo fences suck up more ghg's than a bush does.

Is this an either/or question?  I don't think that even the most dire scenarios of any of the serious prognosticators of global warming has the human race being annihilated.  Humans are adaptive.  However, under the most dire scenarios life would not be pleasant.  Even under the more "mainstream" predictions come increased poverty, reduced biodiversity, water shortages, violent weather fluctuations, prevalence of disease, and political instability.

Whether or not we can do something about it has not been determined.  We know what needs to be done.  However, there is no precedence for a species to consciously thwart a collapse of a system because it had prior knowledge of what pressures it was putting on it.  History tells us, we won't correct course before crisis hits.  It doesn't mean we can't.

Global warming won't kill people, the radical socialists whining why people wo'nt do what they tell them to do will.

Socialists through out history have tried to rise to power, then control everyone's lives through government.

Now maybe someone might actually agree with Stalin and wanted to see a "new Russia" , and a nice place to raise their children, but the reality behind the scene's is that he killed nearly 60 million of his own people in trying to bring his vision of a new and bright tomorrow to reality.

So here we are, 2008, No one has proven global warming isn't anything but a natural cycle on the planet, Al Gore has been proven to lie at least 11 times in his alarmist movie, the idiots out there that don't know history are being played as suckers and falling hard for the global warming crisis....a crisis that is a hoax because NO ONE has proven it to even be a bad thing. Meanwhile we persevere the lies of polar bears drowning when in truth they've more than doubled in population since the 70's, told that we are heating up when the 4 main weather centers in the world show temps plateauing since 1998 and 1/2 a decree down  in 2007 due to less sun spot activity. They cry about the Co2 in the air when its less than 1%. Meanwhile Al Gore and company isn't changing co2, they are trading it...in the form of credits. At least back in the 70's we understood what pollution really was, and thing have changed dramatically over the past decades to improve air and water quality. You really want to see something astounding, check out the quality of water in 3rd world countries, or the dumping grounds in Nigeria. As a nation we are one of the greenest out there. So stop the rampant stupidity of thinking we are the problem or need to improve. We have, and will continue to do so. Why do you think China and India are 6 of the 10 highest polluting areas on the planet ? The USA isn't even on that top list.

Why is it that during our most industrial period (1945 - 70's) while pollution and co2 was on the rise, the temperature was falling ? The supposed experts babck then said we were heading to a min i ice age. Why are these "experts" touting global warming have some money connection to politics or the socialists ?

We have more to fear from fringe groups like suedo communists that have no home to call their own. They have taken up residence for the most part in the democratic party and mean to weaken America by forcing bad policies that will threaten our way of live, change what we stand for and take away the liberties of the people. All for the purpose of "helping the children" or "saving the planet". The USA has done its part, the rest of the world needs to catch up.
