Will grant money affect household members benefits?

I am in the process of getting a grant for collage i am currently living in a low income household,My mother is concerned that if i should receive a set limit of grant money each semester that this will affect her government disability benefits,Medical,and food assistance negatively ..is this true? Would money that would be used just for school supplies & etc. be considered an income?

  1. It depends on exactly what kind of benefits she has.  However, for governmental benefits, all grants, scholarships, etc., that are need-based and used for educational purposes are not included in income calculations that are used for determining benefits.

    Additionally, as a student, you can earn money and exempt it from income calculations.

    However, as a child living with your family, you do provide a small amount of benefit.  They exclude certain income and resources from the calculations to account for the cost of a child.  When you move out, if her income and resources are high enough, it could change the calculations.  Also, once you're 18, you stop counting anyway.  This really only matters if she (or another member of the household) are bringing in income, or if you own certain types of resources.


  2. no, grants will not affect other family members benefits. grant are money that does not need to be pay back. Also, grants are part of finanical aid and it is not considered an income because you are not working for it.
