Will gravel expand too much when water in the ground freezes?

We are filling a hole next to our cabin, containing some pipes. It was originally full of clay, and we are considering filling it back with gravel which seems stronger. In the winter will the water in the gravel expand and cause damage? or is it no different from clay?

  1. The frost line in straight gravel is actually a little deeper than in regular soil or clay.  If you use a mix of particle sizes from sand up and your pipes are below frost line they should be just fine.

  2. No not at all

  3. no its just rocks in a hole, dont worry about it, i would just fill it in with dirt if thats what is around the hole to make it look more natural...
