Question:

Will have a CCJ stop me getting a job?

About a year ago I had a CCJ due to council tax arrears. It was fully paid within a couple of months however im aware this will now be a black mark against my name. I have recently been provisionally offered a job and i have been sent a huge form asking for lots of background details. Im worried that as debt collectors have been involved in the past they may pick up on this on my background check and that it might stop them giving me the job. Its not in finance but is in government and judging by the amount of info they want from me they are quite stringent. Would a check on my previous address bring up the council tax info? Or would they have to do a specific credit check? They havent said on the form that they would do a credit check so can they do one without informing me?

  1. They will check all your details - They have outside companies who do all the reference and background checks and if you lie you will get found out and you'll face disciplinary procedures and probably the sack. Best to be honest.

  2. Who told you you had a County Court Judgment for council tax arrears? You would usually get a Liability Order issued in a magistrates court. Check if you have one and from where it came before you worry too much.

  3. try the link below, they will tell you (for abit of cash) about the type of mark against your name. It will also tell you about any credit checks made by companies.

Be honest on your reply. If having a clean credit rating is important to your job role they may overlook your non payment and appreciate the honesty.

  4. Depends what sort of job - if you are looking to work for a bank, and you have a CCJ, then you will probably find it more difficult.

If you have already paid, then it shouldn't be an issue - the debt will show as satisfied and a couple of months between registering a CCJ and clearing it isn't bad.

If you had a perfectly good explanation (ie; income problems that led to the arrears) then advise them if asked. They must specify if they are going to do a credit check.
