Question:

Will having letters of recommendation benefit me when going to court for driving without insurance or license?

I recently got a ticket for driving with a suspended license and not having insurance, although I wasn't aware of either. I had no idea that my license was suspended, and I had no idea that my father stopped paying my insurance 3 months prior. The very next day I went and got SR22 insurance, got my license reinstated, and got my car out of the impound. My fiance's father is a judge, and my question is if he writes a letter of recommendation will it benefit me at all, and also do I need to prove that he was the one who wrote it, and if so how do I do this? I also wanted to have my boss write a letter as well. I am scared of losing my license, and even more scared of going to jail. If I lose my license I won't have a job, and if I don't have a job I can't pay for college. Please help!

  1. it cant hurt your chances. if you plead guilty and explain your situation, theyll probably go easy on you

  2. lol...............you're in trouble no matter how you look at it.  a letter of recommendation isn't going to help you.  why would you drive without a license or insurance????  you put yourself at risk and all the other drivers on the road.  you should of been scared everytime you got behind the wheel of the car without a license or insurance.  you're only scared because you got caught...sorry, but you deserve whatever they throw at you.

  3. I don't think it will help but it really never hurts to have letters of recommendations. If you have a judge right a letter, he will sign the letter and you may want him in court with you. I don't think your bosses letter will do much, it will state that you need the license for work. You may need to prove that someone else way paying your insurance and that you didn't know it was not being paid at the time of the ticket. I don't know how you can prove that. Sounds like you have everything you need now so that will show the courts you are capable you having things done correctly, having this the next day will be good.

  5. Probably wont  help but can not hurt

  6. A letter from one judge to another is a conflict of interest and a bad idea.

Regarless of whether you knew or not, you were caught and you're guilty. Also, let me point out that just about everyone who is told that their license is/was suspended says "I didn't know" to the officer.

You were d**n lucky that you weren't taken to jail right then and there.

Since you have insured your vehicle, gotten your license reinstated and have retrieved your vehicle from impound, hoopefully that will be punishment enough. You may still face fines, probation, license restrictions or further suspension. At the same time, you may not have any futher penalties.

Regardless of the outcome of your case, remember that checking the validity of your license and insurance is YOUR responsibility...not your father's. Let this be a lesson to you.

  7. If you take a letter from a judge to another judge, that's a conflict of interest.  It could be said that the two judges were friends and that the judge ruling over your case showed favoritism because of the relationship between the two judges.

If you have 30 days before your court date, take your ticket, your proof of insurance, and proof that your license was reinstated to a traffic law center...a place that will have a lawyer go to court and plead your case.  While you are at the traffic law center, be sure to ask for an estimate of how much the ticket will cost.  AND, be prepared to pay a fee for discussing your case...a visit to this place will cost 100-200 right off the top.  Then, the lawyer will get your violation reduced and you will have to pay another couple hundred dollars and that's it.

  8. I think such a letter would hurt, rather than help you.  What would you have the letter of recommendation say?  That you didn't know you were driving with a suspended license ?  That you didn't know you were driving without insurance?  That you are really a swell person and just didn't pay any attention to your responsibilities ?   You can have someone write you a letter, if you wish, but I don't see that it will do a bit of good and if I were the judge, I would throw the book at you for even trying to enter a "letter of recommendation".
