Question:

Will homeowners insurance cover a leak caused by a busted hose on an icemaker?

The hose on our ice maker busted and caused water to leak all over our floor. It ended up ruining about 400 square feet of hardwood flooring and even more carpet. The total claim will be just over $3000.

I have Mercury home insurance, and I can't find in my policy what it says about this. It only says they do not cover "slow seepage of water", but I don't think this would be considered a "slow seepage".

Do you think this claim will be covered or have you ever filed a claim with Mercury?

  1. I think that you will find the term "SUDDEN AND ACCIDENTAL" and this is where you should find some protection.

If it truly was caused by the hose BREAKING, then I would turn in a claim.  Hopefully you have done something to prevent further damage and have done something to dry out the water - wet/dry vac, carpet cleaner vac.

I have had clients that have water damage around their washer - well, mostly comes from spills and wet clothes coming out of the washer. When the washer falls thru the sub-flooring is NOT the time to be wanting relief by filling a claim!

Call your Mercury agent and file the claim.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

  2. do ur self a favor = pay it out of pocket.

even if u get second jobs.

insurance companies like to increase rates or drop owners after claims.

take it out of savings , learn to do it urself.

  3. If it busted all of a sudden it is covered but if it was neglected and leaked over a long time it is not

  4. If the water seeped out over a period of time and caused the floor to rot or mold, then no, it wouldn't be covered because it's a maintenance issue. But, if the line ruptured and caused a massive flow of water all over your kitchen, then yes, it would be covered.

The "slow seepage of water" clause is there to prevent having to refloor a whole house because it's old and has rusted pipes.
