Question:

Will homeowners insurance cover a water leak caused by an ice maker?

The hose on our ice maker busted and caused water to leak all over our floor. It ended up ruining about 400 square feet of hardwood flooring and even more carpet. The total claim will be just over $3000.

I have Mercury home insurance, and I can't find in my policy what it says about this. It only says they do not cover "slow seepage of water", but I don't think this would be considered a "slow seepage".

Do you think this claim will be covered or have you ever filed a claim with Mercury?

  1. This will be covered under your policy. This is a very common claim and I have handled dozens of them over the years.

If you haven't already done so report it to Mercury, photograph the damages and get a professional to replace the hose or valve that caused the damage. DO NOT throw the hose or valve away or let the repair person take it away. Mercury will want to have the hose/valve so they can make a claim for reimbursement (including your deductible) to the manufacturer.

    Good Luck

  2. It probably will, but first consider what your deductible is and the likelihood that your premium may be jacked up afterward.  Not worth it.
