I have worked 6 Months as an employee and 6 Months as a business owner. I am expecting a refund from work as an employee. Not sure if my BAS must be completed before the ATO sends my refund.

  1. BAS is concerned with a different tax from your income tax. It is a record of the GST that you have received and paid. Your income tax refund will be paid regardless of your BAS, but bearing in mind that your BAS has to be submitted by the end of July, I think it's a moot point.

  2. if you have made a profit on your business, you will have to include that in your income tax return, that would take up some or all of your credit from employment. You have two separate accounts with the ATO - an income tax account and an integrated client account which includes your bas amounts. It really depends on what your overall income situation is as to whether you receive a tax refund.

You wont receive a BAS refund if you have outstanding BAS returns. You wont receive a refund if you have an outstanding balance on one account, but if you havent lodged your BAS, you wont have a balance on that account, so it would not stop a refund being issued - assuming you would be entitled to one overall. You do not have an "employee" account and a "business" account - just an overall income tax account.

    hope this helps
