  1. Learning Arabic is a fascinating way to get to know another sector of Israeli society.

    If you have the time and dedication, yearlong, official classes are available at most universities in Israel. Availability, times, and prices vary on university and can be checked at the university's website:

    * Bar-Ilan University, Ramat Gan

    * Ben-Gurion University of the Negev

    * Hebrew University of Jerusalem

    * Open University of Israel

    * Tel Aviv University

    * University of Haifa

    Private tutors are available throughout the country for hourly rates to study written and spoken Arabic, but a less-intensive option while maintaining a formal, class atmosphere is an Arabic-language Ulpan class. These are usually offered at community centers or kibbutzim.

  13. Sure, you can take classes and learn Arabic.  You might check into Ulpan Akiva in Netanya.  They teach several languages, including Arabic and Hebrew, and have won awards for their program.  Netanya is said to be a pleasant small seaside town.  There are other programs as well.

    It is great that you want to learn both languages.  You can see from answers that there is a need for more understanding and communication.  Good luck!

  14. Jim, you can get a head start with a CD program like the one I am doing.  Pimsleur has both.

    Why wait till you get there?  It might be too overwhelming.

    It's just a matter of practicing what you've learned.

  15. Yes, all universities offer courses in Arabic (including all overseas programs, as far as I know) there are also some private courses.

  17. Sure. 20% of the population speaks Arabic as the first language.

    You might consider using a program such as Rosetta Stone before you go. Try their website. I think they still offer a free demo with around 20 lessons in conversational Arabic for free. It's pretty cool because it is designed to teach you by association, like you learn when you are child. You see a picture and hear the name of the object or a simple phrase that is an obvious description of the scene. They have the program for many languages, including Hebrew as well.
