i'm looking into getting one pretty soon, and it will definately be 120 hz. getting a 120hz 1080p is well worth the price if you are buying an hdtv. now take into mind that i am an electronicly minded person and i can see flicker in movements.

i have an old 1080i tv, old enough that it is a 4:3 aspect ratio. and when i am playing rock band i can't hardly read the words as they move across the screen. i don't think that a 3 to 6 feet hdmi cable can have to much loss to them.

but i have started to see hz ratings on some of the pricier cables. is this just a bs way of making people spend more money, or does the width and insolation accually amount in how fast a digital signal can travel through a piece of wire?

  1. Your question is confusing.  Are you really talking about cables?  A "120Hz' cable doesn't make sense.   I gather from your first paragraph that you are planning to get a new TV; 1080p 120Hz is definitely going to improve the clarity of text and the smoothness of motion.  However, that is all in the TV and has nothing to do with the cable.  The cable does not carry 120Hz--that is generated inside the TV.   The cable carries 1080p60Hz only.   All you need is a 1080p qualified HDMI cable.  If your cable is less than 5 meters (15ft) long, get the cheapest you can find.

Here is a good source of quality, low priced HDMI cables:

It think "120Hz" cable is a marketing gimmick (like HDTV antennas).

  2. It's marketing BS.

Think of it this way, the 120Hz refresh is done in the TV. Why would the cable that brings the 60Hz refresh rate signal have any affect on the 120Hz capability?

It's just another way of trying to peddle $100 cables, when a $20 cable will do the job.

  3. You are better off looking at the rating of the cable itself. Any 1.3 rated HDMI will do what you need at 1080p and 120 HZ. So in a word yes, there is some serious BSing going on to sell more expensive cables.

  4. if you are doing such a short run regular hdmi cable is fine.. dont need to get high end unless you are extending it for more than 15 feet or so..  inspiretech sell a decent one for 5 bucks or so
