Will i go to jail for self defense ?

would i go to jail if i kill or seriously hurt the criminal while defending myself when he attacked me ?

As long as the degree of self defense you used was minimal enough to escape or stop the criminal from attacking you then you should be fine. As long as you didn't kill the person you should be fine.

no, unless you can properly prove that you only acted in self defense and did not use excessive force then you had to.

e.g if the person is restrained on the ground and then you knifed him it will definitely be manslaughter

Some states have Duty to Retreat laws where you have to make an attempt to retreat first before physically fighting back. Other have a Stand Your Ground law where you do not have to retreat and can fight back immediately.

First you must fear for your life and you can only fight back with force that is reasonable. So, if someone shoves you off a curb,  you can not pull out a gun in defense. No matter what, you would have to prove in court that you feared for your life and  you only acted in self-defense.
