  1. My son was in Tae Kwon Do for a year and earned a green belt. He was not required to fight anyone where we went. They DID have sparring/fighting but, it was optional & we did not chose to participate as the lessons were rather pricey & the sparring equiptment was extra & so we chose not to. I did watch the sparring (both children & adults), and they do match you up level wise & as close as they can weight/size wise so, I hope this answers your question!

    Enjoy your classes!

  2. Yes, if you want to get better in your martial arts. Fighting and sparring really help because they allow you to test what you have learned, and you really can learn a lot more from sparring. It is also very fun at the same time. If getting hurt is what is worrying you, you will be fine. You won't actually fight hardcore, and plus you are wearing protection.

  3. Why not spar? Why learn a punch or kick, but not learn how to apply it in real time.

  4. You will have to spar once you learn the basics and you should be grateful for that; because a lot of other styles don't allow free style fighting until you reach a higher rank and by then you will look and perform like a beginner when you actually do spar. strike while the iron is hot or the work won't get done.

  5. Yes, of course it will be same rank as you and it depends on height and the weight.

Don't worry they give you a protection when fighting~

  6. Oh yes, almost certainly! Sparing is my fav part XD It depends on your school, but most schools usually only make you fight people the same height and rank as you; not in my school though, I have to spar black belt :( LOL, I get my butt kicked everytime. Some schools however, do not spar at all, but I find the sparing is one of the best parts.

  7. If you join a sparring class, then yes you will.

TKD can use the following pads for protection: helm, hands, feet, shin, groin, mouthpeice, and stomach (so you look like a turtle) hehe.

With that gear you shouldn't really be too scared depending on the self-control of the opponent you use hopefully ligh contact with.

My studio has adult sparring class / kids sparring class.  Browns belts can not go to the head of a lower belt, if you are a brown and are fighting a brown / black belt - then the head is open - light contact on face though.

When i was younger the kids sparring class paired opponents together on age, height, usually never belt. If a higher lvl belt was to go against you, a smart instructor would tell him to help you, not discourage you.

  8. You might have to spar with black belts and higher ranks but not to worry. These guys are trained not to hurt you and won't do anything bad. You're probably more likely to get hurt from a white belt being careless rather than a BB. But still I'm a beginner and haven't been hurt yet (4 months training).. It's all in your head!

  9. Probably yes. In the dojo where i practiced, I had to fight not only those in my own level but I had to fight with my seniors as well. Guess what, they were about 3-6 ranks higher than me and a some of them were close to getting their black belts.

The good news is, if you end up in a dojo where you have to fight your seniors, you'll end up getting good,... "FAST!".

  10. same height  diff weight diff belt lvl and also to train urself for a sparring match during grading or compeitition
