  1. The Riu Palace Las Americas is located in the heart of the Hotel Zone in Cancun (nowhere near Playa Del Carmen). In the Hotel Zone there is lots to do and see during the day and night. You have access to the nice beaches during the day, although it will be very hot. When I was in Cancun two weeks ago it was 93 during the day and around 85 at night (the low temp was 81).

My favorite club was Coco Bongo where they have a sort of variety show. They have imitation acts like Madonna and Elvis and they have acrobatics shows too from people swinging from the ceilings. Everyone is drinking and dancing and having a good time the whole while.

I also tried going to one of the wet t-shirt contests but was disappointed since they told me the show was at 1am. So at 1:30 am I asked about it and they told me it would be another hour so I just left because I was tired.

I stayed in downtown Cancun because it was cheaper ($100/nite at the Radisson). The two top restaurants according to what I've read: La Parilla's and Perico's both located on Yachitlan Ave. Personally I have been to La Parilla's and I thought the food was ok, but the service was outstanding. Order the bananas flambee, you won't forget it. They will flambee the bananas right in front of you for a cool show and tasty treat.

I have learned to have an appreciation for Mexican food and I would encourage you to try the different Mexican dishes at the local restaurants. Try the Chicken Mole if you haven't tried it yet. It's a dark brown colored sauce with chocolate, beans, and other spices mixed in. Also commonly found on the menus in this part of the Riviera is Mayan food. I thought it was interesting being able to have a bowl of Mayan bean soup (which was good). You won't be able to have Mayan soup in the United States so this is your chance.

Btw - this is just my opinion, but I swear their food is healthier over there. It just seems like the food they prepare doesn't have all the refinements they we have here (which generally translates into increased nutrient content). At each meal I was satisfied. Here in the U.S. each time I take in a meal I feel like grabbing some sweets afterward because the meal fails to satisfy me.

Getting back to the review: It will cost you approximately .65 cents US to take the R1 bus from the hotel zone to downtown Cancun. Get off on the 2nd or 3rd stop on Tulum Ave or tell the bus driver you want to goto La Parilla's.

Not everyone spoke english while I was there, don't count on your bus driver or taxi driver to do it. Most speak broken english but that doesn't mean they understand every word you are saying. Also, pay for your taxi and bus fares in pesos. If you pay in dollars you likely won't get change.

Market 28 (or Mercado Veinte Ocho) is where you can find bargains for cheap souvenirs. To get there start on Tulum Ave (easy to find). From there take Coba ave., then take Coba to Yachitlan. Then you can follow the signs to Mercado 28 or ask a friendly street vendor and they can point the way. It looks like a flea market on the outside, but their prices will likely be cheaper than in the Hotel Zone where they will sock it to you (depends on how well you bargain too).

Cheap eats for Americans: Walmart. Try Walmart for your pizza, submarine sandwiches, spaghetti, or peaches and cream. They are in downtown Cancun. I believe the R3 bus takes you there. Just look at the Window of the bus and it will tell you where it goes, it should say "Walmart". Or if you don't want to leave the hotel zone you can eat at Hooters or any number of places.

You know what's funny, the people who are paranoid about getting sick from drinking the water are usually the ones who get sick. As soon as I got there I started drinking the water. Drink it from the tap if you have to, just like a 1/4 mouthful after you've brushed your teeth and go to bed. The best thing you can do for your body is to expose it to the local bacteria so it knows what to do with it when it's eventually exposed to large quantities of it. The dumbest thing you can do is avoid the local water altogether because you're gonna get exposed eventually.

I did not see any alligators, or any of these critters while I was in Cancun.

  2. Im sure you'll love cancun, been to mexico before and its a very nice place, and very hot.

theres alot to do there, and since your young im sure you'll have enough energy hehe :)

  3. I was there in May and it was my 3rd time to Cancun. There is so much to do, two weeks just isn't enough! The Riu Palace is one of the better hotels in Cancun and its near all the bars and restaurants like Hard Rock Cafe, Daddy O's, Bulldog Cafe, Hooters and the unbelievable Coco Bongo's.

You can swim with Dolphins, go jet ski-ing on the lagoon, visit Mayan ruins and got to an Eco-park for the day ( Xcaret is paradise). I could go on all day about Cancun!! I think we might be going back next year! Don't worry about it , it is fantastic. Enjoy!

  4. OMG you will luvv it! I went during last summer and I still can feel everything that was there! I loved it so much and its so beautiful so dont forget the camera!!!!:)

But they have scuba diving, beaches with beautiful veiws, many nice hotels and resturaunts, and lots of wild animals(mainly iguanas)

You'll need suntan lotion, camera, swimsuit(duhh), and maybe a cap or loose hat cause some days can be VERY hot and sunny!

    Hope I helped!:)

  5. no.. there are mosquitos the size of your head and giant squarrels.. August is the worst time to visit cause then the Alligators the size of new hampshire come out and attack the tourists... BEware!!!!

  6. It is  a man-made resort area started in the late sixties / early seventies so don't expect any culture.Take an organized coach trip to Chichen Itza if you want a bit of culture. It is well worth it.

Cancun caters for the English speaking tourists (especially Americans) so most Mexicans you meet will be able to speak English.

It is just "sun and sand"type of place.

You may get a hurricane that time of the year but hopefully not.

I haven't been there for a few years but my info holds true going by what other people have told me about how it is now.

Hope You  have a good trip.

  7. okay...first of all...you are going to playa del carmen....45 minutes south of cancun.  riu palace is a very nice resort.....as are all the other riu resorts.  playa has a wonderful little street called 5th avenue that is great for food, clubs, and shopping.  the beach there is wonderful.  it is not as much of a party place as cancun, but very nice.  i dont know anything about those big *** mosquitos....there are a lot because this is a tropical place, but i never seen any that big. lol  i have never seen alligators attack tourists or the squirrels....i know we have both here, but i have NEVER seen either one.  i eat the food on the streets all the time....have for 10 years.  do be careful of the water....all the restaurants serve bottled water...so dont worry.  now, dont be stupid and eat just anything.....the food cooking in the little stands on the side of the street could be full of bacteria....i eat it but i live here and i am use to it.  the food on the resort is all safe......dont let people get you worried.  just come to cancun......check with your conceirge for activities and tours.  actually......i know a wonderful tour that you would enjoy....it is a 4 x 4 land rover adventure.  i would be glad to send you info on it....i think you would love it.  just email me if you are interested and i will email you a brochure on it.  they pick you up at the resort and take you back at the end of the stay....it is close to playa del carmen and a very fun day.  have fun on your vacation and dont worry.

  8. You are going to love it. It is gorgeous there, but you might not like some of there food so dont try anything your not sure of.

  9. It's a very tourist friendly place... it's nice just don't eat street food or drink any water, ice, salad etc... you will be on the bathroom floor sick as a dog.

Not a memorable vacation for me but nice
