I like my job or I'd just quit, my friend's coming to town though and I didn't have enough notice to ask for the time off.

that is a policy decision.

excessive absenteeism is grounds for immediate termination with cause regardless of the reason for being absent.

no matter what excuse (lie) you use you can be fired if caught

and obviously you don't care about your fellow employees who are either going to work short handed or give their time off up to cover for you.

hope you are proud and impressed with yourself and quitting probably won't be an issue

(it's a holiday weekend do you really think your employer won't figure this out)

Make up another lie.  Being sick is the most common lie for getting a day off.  Be creative and original.  

Most likely you may need one depending on your employer.  If they ask for one, then you're in trouble and have to figure out how to counter your original lie.  Think through your lies before you actually lie!! Don't get caught!

If you are in high school, I would take this as a lesson to learn. Tell your boss you have someone important coming in town and want to try to change shifts with someone. That's an option if you are going to miss work.

Or, your friend, really, should just allow you to work and you can hang out afterwards.

It sounds like you aren't serious about your job, whatever it may be, if you don't know the policies when it comes to missing time. You should evaluate what's really important or look for another mall job.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to get one. If you are calling out just because you don't want to go to work then you probably don't enjoy your job enough to be working there.
