US citizens need a valid passport.

You can go to the site below to see that the U.K. is  on the list of countries whose citizens do not need a visa to visit Mexico.  You will get a tourist card on the plane which costs about $22.00 USD.

Yes you do need a visa, the good news is that you will get one when you pass through immigration at the border. You will get a tourist visa which can be good for up to 6 months. Have a great trip and don't sweat the visa.
