  1. There are comets that can be seen right now.

I've seen at least two naked eye comets since Hale-Bopp.  And, there was a bright comet the previous year.

The link as a list of comets brighter than 12th magnitude.  They need to be brighter than 6th magnitude to see them without aid.

  2. I've heard that good comets come about once a decade. There was Hale-Bopp in 1997, and McNaught in 2007.  But that is just an average.  There could be one on its way right now, or not for 30 years.  But isn't that what makes comets so special?

  3. Friday. April 13th. 2029. 99942 Apophis. This asteroid, you will most certainly see.

  4. good comets tend to be surprises. you will know about it as soon as everybody else does.

sometimes they are new comets, like hale-bopp and hyakutake. other times they are known comets behaving strangely, like 17p/holmes last year. either way, they cannot be predicted.

  5. There are relatively few comets as bright as Hale-Bopp was, but there are two or three visible every year, if you know where to look for them. For example, in October-December last year there was a  bright naked-eye comet, Holmes, visible from all over the northern hemisphere.

  6. C/2008 A1 McNaught

The comet is closest to the Sun on Sep 29, 2008 at 1.07AU. It may achieve a peak brightness of magnitude 6 during September 08 for observers in the southern hemisphere, during evening hours.

  7.       Comets         brighter than 5magnitude appears in every 5or 6 years and chances are more. But look for them in astronomical newsletters or magazines and have a binocular or small telescope ready.
