  1. Most of us Finns do choose English for their first foreign language at school, so you should not have any problems whatsoever with using English!! Especially those working within tourism are very well trained in many languages, not only Finnish, Swedish, and English!

  2. I just got back from Estonia and don't speak any Estonian. I did absolutely fine and had no problems as most of the people speak Estonian and even when they don't, eye contact can be all you need. I would guess it would be the same in Finland. Generally, a smile can get you a long way. Just learn how to say a few words (hi - terre, please = palun, sorry, vabandage, aitah=thank you) and you should be fine!

  3. With English under your belt you shouldn't have any problems in either country. A lot of people speak or at least understand English there (especially the younger generation). English will be easier to come across in the larger cities and "touristy" areas but you can get by elsewhere as well. Like in any foreign country or large city - be aware of your surroundings and don't make yourself a target by keeping your valuables in plain sight (keep them hidden and hard to snatch). Also, stop by tourism offices in major cities to get pointers and places to visit (they can help you in English).

Dont worry too much - just have a good time!

  4. Yes. English is the most widely spoken language in the world, so someone there is bound to speak it and bound to be willing to help you if you need.

And of course, many gestures are universal, such as facial expressions, general body movement, and most hand gestures.

If you act lost, and ask for help, someone is likely going to understand you need help eve if they don't speak english or japanese.

  5. You will find that most people in Finland, especially in the cities, speak English.

    In Estonia, not so much.

  6. Of course you will. Estonians speak english. Only maybe some older people don't. But if you ask young people, they all do. We learn it in school. And in Finland too. But I don't think much people understang Japanese though.

  7. Hey English is International language, so you will do OK, only remember always to keep your money in safe place and any time you go out take some small amount apart.
