Will infrared light effect or hurt the human eye?

I was just wondering if an infrared led was shining directly into your eye will it cause any damage to your eye? lets say something weak like a tv remote infrared led or weaker.

  1. Not at that level: you're exposed to much greater levels outside day-to day.

    (which is why some IR remote controls won't work outside)

    But enough IR radiation can cause damage, and long-term damage at that...  Cataract and macular burns in particular.

    With respect to cataract the damage is cumulative rather than simply being down to one dangerous incident

    Glassblower's and furnaceworker's cataracts came from the gradual effect of years of exposure.


  2. It can irritate your eye, but it's not as strong as the laser they use in lasix if that's what you mean.

    I wouldn't recommend it, but I doubt that there would be any serious long-term effects
