i am 17 and planning to go to Nyc for college. I'm just wondering since i am from another country and not familiar with NYC yet, would it be fine or safe if i live alone in NYC? I'm still looking for colleges that i will be admitted to and how is it commuting from one place to another in nyc if you're still new to the place?

also, what do you think about community colleges? im planning to take an associates degree and transfer to university after. which schools would be best?

is there a place where i could stay where most college/international students are? and would it be possible for a 17 y/o to rent a room?

any tips?? suggestions for beginners?

thanks

  1. Probably the best solution for you is to live in the dorms. You can make friends easier that way.

  2. Not if she were my daughter!

The only way I'd let a 17-year old daughter of mine move to New York City to attend college would be if she lived in a dormitory.

One problem is that as a minor, you would be unable to sign a lease for an apartment.  For another thing, a 17-year old stranger in town just would not know her way around nor the ways of the city.  It would be dangerous for you to try.

I'm not trying to tell you don't attend college in New York City.  I'm just saying live in college housing.  It will not only be safer, but most likely cheaper.  I'd strongly suggest you live in a dormitory at least until your Junior year and preferably your Senior year.

    Good Luck,

    Doc
