I'm a 17 year old girl(not so small) and i want to move to Monterey County, California to study to become a professional translator at the Institute of International Studies.Right now i live in NJ with my parents like i have always. i have a mild case of a disability(cerebral palsy) can walk feed myself but can hardly use my right hand/arm. etc.. i felt that moving across the country would be a great experience and new challenge. Finding that I would earn a new type of responsibility because i've depended on my parents most of my life. Living on campus, and getting a job, i have always wanted to live in California State and felt that this school,Monterey Institute of International Studies, is the school for me, and i cant give it up. my parents may get a little nervous of what i want, but inside of me, i feel a little excited not nervous because it's actually what i really dream about after i graduate high school. i want to become a translator...what do you think of my decision?

  1. Its a beautiful dream, live it . Begin laying the foundation . You have an advantage, its not facilities but difficulties that makes a man . GOD BEFRIENDS THOSE WHO CLIMB DETERMINATIONS HEIGHT.Wish you success.

  2. I think it's a great idea ... but you do need to learn that "abroad" means another country, not another place in the same country.

I actually had a friend who went from Kansas to Washington D.C. who had a similar disability to yours and she graduated with honors!

    Good luck!

  3. go outside and eat chicken thats for sure

  4. Go for it!  We have a student in our ESL program with significant mobility issues (on crutches and moves pretty slowly).  She's an international student far from home and she's doing great.  She came with very low level English, so not only is she dealing with her mobility issues but with significant language issues, as well.  If she can do it, you can, too.  Someday, you have to be on your own, and pursuing your work at Monterey is a great idea. You can do it!!!

  5. Absolutely, that's a great idea, and MIIS is a wonderful institution.  The American Disabilities Act requires that all institutions provide support to students with disabilities.  Talk to MIIS and find out what they can offer to support you.   Having that information will put both you and your parents at ease.
