Will it be the Pirates that made the best in the 3-team trade in 3-5 years?

Everyone is saying either Boston or LA were the winner in this deal, but will the Bucs have the last laugh in the near future?

  1. If someone had told me before the season that Xavier Nady and Jason Bay would be traded and fans of Pittsburgh would be optimistic about the future... I would laugh.  I'm not laughing now.

  2. I think so ... this is a case of addition by subtraction ... forget La Roche, he's not a factor. What this deal does is now give the Bucs the money to sign Pedro Alvarez.by the 15th. Neil Walker is also another name in the minors to be considered over La Roche. It also opens up OF slots for Mc Cutcheon and Pearce ... they finally got rid of Duffy yesterday and Moss will be a serviceable OF off the bench. Hansen still has a chance to be a solid enough arm once the decided to make him either bullpen or starter.

Manny's a two month rental and Bay may not like Boston so he could leave after next year. I think the dominoes fall the Pirates' way here.

  3. Sorry, but those prospects don't look very promising to me. And when is the last time that the Pirates made any decisions that worked out well for them? The Pirates had a very good offense and terrible pitching this year. Now they've lost two of their good outfielders, and the pitching still sucks. I wouldn't be feeling too excited about this if I was a Pirates fan. In five years, the Pirates will probably be in the same place that they are now, where they were five years ago, where they were 10 years ago, and where they were 15 years ago: at the bottom of their division/league, with a sub-.500 record.

Whit Sox, Bay is already signed through 2009. You don't know what you're talking about.

  4. Some of these responses are just killing me! I really think that the Pirates got the best of that deal!

First of all, they didn't lose much. Bay was unhappy with the Pirates management, and wanted a team that could win anyway, so the chances of him returning next season were very minimal, seeing as he would demand a lot of money and he was not happy with the Pirates organization.

Andy LaRoche is a great baseball player! Last year in AAA, he hit .309 and is currently hitting .293. And with his brother, that could improve the chemistry.

One person above me said that Bryan Morris was not good because he was a single A pitcher. He was also the first round pick for the Dodgers in the 2007 draft, and has an ERA or 3.20 and averages nearly 1 strikeout per inning. If you honestly expect a player that was just drafted a year ago to be in the bigs, you ought to rethink. He will end up being a great pitcher one day!

Craig Hansen is struggling this year, but maybe a change in scenery could help him improve. He had a lot of pressure pitching for the Red Sox and hopefully this trade will calm him down.

Brandon Moss is a major league ready outfielder, and I expect him to be a starter one year.

THis is a great trade! The Pirates are getting set for the future with these small trades! Just because they didn't acquire big names, doesn't mean they didn't make the better trade!

My brother is mad, and I keep trying to explain these points! I hope that everything goes well for the Pirates!

Mecahnic: made a mistake. During this year's Spring Training or last year's, I think I heard something where Jason Bay was unhappy with the Pirates, and the general management and wanted out, unless they could fix it. Either way, I think that Jason's attitude toward the Pirates, and him wanting to be on a winning team, affected the clubhouse, and thus provoked a trade. The Pirates weren't winning with Jason anyway, so it couldn't hurt too much, seeing as Moss could take that job soon! My bad!

  5. I absolutely think the pirates got the best deal here...They got players from both teams.  If you look at those guy's numbers, they look pretty good...Basically LaRoche and Moss are gonna be the two big guys in the deal...

  6. no heres why

laroche- a ok player nothing good

brandon moss- coca crisp to me

hansen- maybe good later but a 5 era

the other guy- single a pitcher

  7. Definitely the Pirates and the Rangers are the teams that are planning ahead. Boston wants to win NOW. We actually have a great farm system and a lot of young talent, but no one enhanced their team like the Pirates did for the future. Starting around 2011 you guys will be very very good.
