Question:

Will it hurt my eyes if I wear normal contacts but have astigmatism?

I have astigmatism and it's so bad that I need torics to correct it, but my doctor gave me Accuvue Oasis disposables for normal eyes. In the office, she showed me the letter chart without correction for my astigmatism and I still had 20/20. She said if I could deal with the slight bluriness, normal contacts would be a lot cheaper, more comfortable, and overall better than disposable torics. I've worn the contacts for 3 days now and the doc was right, I can still read fine even with the slight bluriness and I can deal with not having the correction for astigmatism. The question here is, however, will wearing normal contacts hurt my astigmatistic eyes? I am scared to death of hurting my cornea. Any advice would be very welcome.

Also, I'm on my 3rd day wearing contacts and I've noticed that sometimes things look a little blurrier than usual, sometimes things look a little clearer than usual, and my right eye feels blurrier than my left eye. Is this normal? Will this go away once I've worn them longer? In terms of comfort, I am totally fine with contacts and they don't bother me at all, it took my less than 5 minutes to not feel them on anymore.

  1. You will not be injured. Your doctor has fit you with the correct measurements, she is just giving you the choice of what is best and what is cheapest. It is your choice.  Just do not fear for your safety. She will make sure that they do not hurt you. that is what the doctor does.

  2. As long as you are getting acceptable vision with them, and they are comfortable, there is no problem.

    It won't hurt anything...guaranteed.
