Will it make a big difference?

if i was in the Marines for four years as an infantryman and after my four years was up i got a job as a cop would a college degree make much of a differance as far as pay and promotion?

  1. Depends on the department but my department pays extra per month for a college degree..not so for 4 yrs military.. And as you rise through the ranks, a degree becomes important. For example, to be an asst chief at my department its required.

Every agency has different requirements.  Some want just college, some want college and/or military and some want prior experience.   From my experience, Illinois agencies have gone away from taking military experience as college credit.  Some still do but they are far and few between.  Although during the application process you can still be given additional points toward hire.

    College degrees will help in the longevity of your career.  High school diplomas are great for patrolman.  Higher education greatly improves your ability to be promoted.  Lieutenants and above are BA's, chief are masters degrees.

    Military time does not hurt but college will get you up in the ranks.  I had no college and I was able to get my BA while working for my agency.  It was well worth it.  The agency I work for is one of the last that allows military time as college credit toward hiring.  Good Luck, Devil Dog.  Semper Fi
