  1. As was said above.  These countries can be very dangerous.  This is said not to scare you or tell you not to go there.  I've spent  mucho tiempo in Guatemala without incident, but I would also never go camping unescorted into unfamiliar territory.  You have to understand that there are populations and villages that have been used, abused, and had their land taken from them by outsiders.  An innocent camping trip may be interpreted as hostile by some populations.  Mob/vigilante violence and killings are not uncommon in these countries.

So what I am saying is organize any camping expeditions through a reputable tour company.  They will be able to rent you all the equipment that you need.

  2. Leave your tent at home and stay in hostels or backpacker hotels.  You can leave whatever valuable possessions you have at the hostel and go exploring on short outings.  Oh yeah, those possessions.  Here's the rule.  Don't take anything you can't stand to lose.  Your space in your pack can be much better filled with simple things you need for the journey but not sleeping bags and camping stuff.  I saw no tents for rent anywhere in Latin America and very few tents at all.

  3. Great Choices.........many places, maybe all south of the USA boarder are NOT good places to take off like you are thinking.  These are BEAUTIFUL countries and well worth the time to visit and live.  I DO NOT suggest you consider going off "the trail" without reputable guides.  Sorry.  These are very poor countries and there are people who will.......cut your throat.......REALLY........for your goods, or what they think they you have.  I don't want to scare you off........AT ALL...........but you MUST realize the reality.  There are inexpensive hostels to stay in.  Some places you can go for hikes, be sure some one knows you are going.......DO NOT take valuables, not even a watch, cell phone, expensive hiking gear.  I regret saying these things, I live in Honduras now and absolutely LOVE Guatemala, the mountains where the Natives live.  It IS a reality though.  Go, it's inexpensive.  DO barter, even for taxi's.  BE SURE the taxi is "solo", not going to pick up others.  PLEASE do go.........consider yourself in a "bad neighborhood"........BEAUTIFUL and WELL worth going.  The people are basically wonderful.........but DO NOT count on it, you are not in the USA, Life and Living are TOUGH.  Go, Enjoy........you'll never forget it.   Travel lightly, you will want to pick up some things along the way, especially in the mountains of Guatemala.  TAKE CARE........
