Question:

Will it work well to use a wall to project onto, or will I need a pull-down screen?

I'm going to buy an Optoma DV11 projector. If you don't think that's the best choice please comment. Also, can you tell me lots of details like is there some paint that I should paint my wall with. It's big enough and it's painted white right now. Thanks.

  1. Any of the following 1080p projectors come in under $3,000

    Sony VPL-VW40

    Panasonic PT-AE2000U

Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 1080 UB

For your "screen" you can get some good information in this thread - http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?... which will help you do it yourself.

  2. Well, you can certainly try projecting on your white wall and see how well it works. If it doesn't look good enough to your eyes, you can get special paint which is designed for projection. It's called "Screen Goo" (really); see the link below.

Now about the DV11. I think it's kind of strange to have an all-in-one unit which includes the DVD player and speakers. You want the speakers to be beside the screen, not back in the room where the projector is. This projector produces up to 34 dB in noise level, presumably from a fan. It strikes me not as a home projector, but a portable one for office use, where it would sit on the conference table.

  3. I own an epson powerlight 76c, which costs around $700.  Good picture but terrible built-in sound, but I solved that problem by using my dad's old stereo system.  Anyway, white paint on a smooth surface should offer a good projection screen.  I would not recommend what i had to do, which was to  hang a sheet on a wall with wallpaper behind it.
