We are going to rent an apartment who has a reputation of overcharging at move out a lot. If we moved in, moved out, and were charged a lot of "cleaning/repair" fees that were invalid and we refused to pay- thus having to sue, would we have trouble renting future apartments because of it?

Thank you

  1. Yes.

Landlords usually ask about lawsuits on the application and check (criminal, civil, small claims, housing) court records in their background check.

Basically, landlords try to stay away from tenants that have sued, or been sued by, previous landlords.

  2. If you know this ahead of time, why on earth would you move there?  The tone of your question sounds like you are doing this on purpose to try and get more money out of the landlord.

But to answer your question, YES, if he wins in court, then it would be on your credit report for up to 6 yrs and you would have a problem renting or buying a house if that credit is checked.

Move in somewhere else.  You would be a fool to move in this place.
