Will listening to heavy music affect me in the future?

Hello everyone. This is my first question on yahoo answers, i hope it goes well.

After searching the internet for answers to my question, i've decided to come to Yahoo Answers. I've recently (about 6 months ago) started playing the elcectric guitar and im loving it. However now that im watching interveiws of rockstars and pro guitar players i realize that most of them...are kinda dumb sounding. I know it seems shallow but i mean, they cuss alot, they drink, you can tell they do drugs, and i mean its just not just a few. I honestly could not tell you the name of a rock guitar player who doesn't look like a zombie or cuss endlessly.

Anyway, all this in a nutshell: If i continue to listen and play loud/incoherrent music (Which i strangely love) then if i become a musician will i suffer the same fate as the others? (Also, will my iq go down and will my grades drop because of the music?)

Please help =(

  1. You are in control of your behavioral manifestations to a point.

It is true that if you immerse yourself in this culture, you will tend to change your lifestyle to fit in.

However, you certainly won't lose any IQ points, unless you become a heavy drug user.

I think that you might just want to play on the periphery of this avocation, rather than making it a full time job or a vocation.

If you do that, you should not suffer any harmful effects.

  2. Yes, it will!

  3. Hold it...!

I am a heavy metal guitarist with a Masters degree who is free of drugs/alcohol/partying etc. I never even grew my hair long (even though it was the in thing for metalheads) because Mom and Dad never approved of it. I guess I ended up ok!

Some folks thought it was cool to do drugs and drink and sleep around in order to "prove" your mettle as a rocker. This never cut it for me though...never had a drop of alcohol, and I'm staying a virgin until marriage...

So it's up to you. You wanna turn into a jerk, go for it. You want to live a clean life, go for it.

BTW It's true most rocksters give rock a bad name, but there are some shining examples that come through: The Boss Bruce Springsteen, Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, Cliff Richard: all known for their clean drug and alcohol-free lifestyles...AND all 3 of them some of the biggest stars in the business.
