the greater horseshoe area has almost the same area as greater Chicago.

it has 8-9 million people and gdp per capita is almost the same as Chicago's.

that means that Toronto has one of the 10 biggest city economies in the world.

  1. I really don't think you can consider the entire Golden Horseshoe to be part of the Toronto metropolitan area. This is because the "commutershed" (the area from which most commuters to the central city) doesn't extend all the way around the Golden Horseshoe. In other words, people who live, say, in Niagara Region aren't likely to commute to Toronto; they're much more likely to commute to Hamilton, if they leave Niagara to work at all.

  2. A few facts about the Toronto area.

The city of Toronto is a area of 255 square miles. The five cities that surround Toronto are Mississiauga, Vaughan, York and Durham. The popualtion of th city of Toronto is now about 3 million, and the five surrounding cities add up to an additional 3 million people.

The term "The Golden Horseshoe " reffers to the 125 miles that run from Oshawa, thru Toronto, to Niagara falls, along the shores of Lake Ontario.

About a third of ALL the people who live in Canada,  ( 12 million people, of the  national total of 32 million ) live within 200 miles of Toronto.

So yes it is a massive popualtion centre.
