Question:

Will my 15 mo. old cat ever like my new kitten?

My older cat (Fiona, female) is a bit over a year old. I've seen her with our next door neighbor's cat and they seem to get along pretty well. So I figured she would happily welcome a new kitten but so far that is not the case. She hisses and growls whenever the kitten (Jack, male) is around. She even growls and hisses at me if she smells the kitten on me.

I know I need to let the two of them work things out and it will get better with time. But what are the chances they will actually grow to LIKE each other and play since there really isn't a huge age difference?

Thanks in advance. :)

  1. put a few cat toys out for them to play with, at the same time. we have 10 cats and 1 kitten. 3 cats play with kitten. the others watch or sleep. all are fixed. kitten will be when she is old enough. until then she doesn't go out. older cats are out most of the time.since you have a male and a female, please get them fixed. to many unwanted cats. that's how we ended up taking in strays.

  2. My parents cat when I put my cat next to him hissed at my cat. My cat ignored his hissing and touched noses with him and walked away. Now they walk past each other without hissing soooooo give your cats some time they will work things out

  3. She's just used to be the only cat getting the attention, and females are just like that in general anyways. She'll be fine after time I'm sure. Most animals, even when you bring in dogs, become best friends in the end. But good luck!

  4. When I got my kitten, my chihuahua dog loved her immediately but the kitten hated the dog and was aggressive.  Now she calmed down, and they're friends.  They  eat from the same bowl and sleep next to eachother sometimes, but the cat still loves to tease the poor dog sometimes!!!!!!!

  5. I have the same problem going on right now.  My older cat (also Jack, male) would accept the kitten I think, but the kitten (Ava, female) CONSTANTLY is in play mode and wants to attack.  I've had her almost 2 months and things are still not going smoothly.  She continues to push to "play" (I hope it is play) and he gets her down and looks like he is really trying to hurt her so I separate them.  I'm hoping once she is a little bigger she will be able to take care of herself a little more.  I know I didn't answer your question but you're not alone.  And so far, for me, things have not gotten better, even when I try to let them work it out.  She ends up squealing and I have to separate them.  Good luck, I hope things get better for all of our kitties soon!
