Will my 1989 50hp outboard motor chage my starting battery while it runs?

  2. This size engine usually has a 5 amp alternator, which will charge at 5 amps when it runs. If it runs long enough it will completely charge your battery. I put a charger on my battery between trips to make certain I had a LOT of juice in my battery. Pulling the starter cord on an 85-HP engine is not an optimum thing to do.

  3. Yes, the alternator on an outboard doesn't throw a lot of juice, but it will provide a light charge to your battery.

  4. The charging system on your outboard is a 5 Amp charger. That's 5 amps at full throttle. At any less than WOT you get less than 5 amp. If you had nothing pulling power from your battery except the starter and you didn't start it much but ran it all day then your motor's charging system would keep the battery reasonably charged up. However, if you have a depth sounder or radio or any other electronic unit on-board you need to put the battery on a charger.
