  1. yes. Please contact your local early intervention /birth to 3 program. They will screen all areas of his development and let you know if there is anything to be concerned about. Personally I would say that he is at least 12 months behind in expressive speech. My son was 27 months old and said 10 words and that was what I was told. EI pays for him to see a speech therapist 2x per week and pays for adaptive materials for him. It took about 5 months for my son to make a lot of progress, but he now says 150+ words and knows about 50+ signs.

  2. Yes, probably.  My oldest was well over 2 before she really started with understandable words.  Her ped said it would be of a concern if she didn't understand what we said but she did - she would follow directions like, hand me the toy or whatever.  Also she used the point and grunt method to commuicate with us.  Looking back at some old videos, she actually was talking in her own language mostly half syllables 'sh' for shoes 'ha' for hat etc.  I just didn't notice it at the time.

It sounds like he is communicating, just his own way right now.

  3. What does his pediatrician say about his speech delay? Hasn't this come up at regular checkups? If not, then speak to the doctor at his 2 year checkup and find out how you can have him evaluated for speech/hearing problems.

DO NOT DELAY. If his lack of speech is caused by a hearing problem the longer you delay the harder it will be for your little boy.

  4. Don't worry my daughter who just turned 3 did not talk till she was 2 1/2 and now she is repeating everything I say she talks all the time. Some kids are just waiting to speak in sentences. Every one was worried about her also but she is just fine.
