  1. Any type of pellet will do the job. Shot placement is what counts.

  2. IMO the Crosman 760 is not powerful enough to hunt small game.

    ME(Muzzle Energy)

    625fps with 5.1gr BB = 4.42fpe

Pellets are slightly more efficient, so you would pick up a little, but not enough.

    550fps - 6.9gr pellet = 4.64fpe >estimate

With a perfect head shot you can take a pigeon or starling(3.0fpe) - sparrow or mouse(2.0fpe)

With the right pellets you would still have slightly over 3.0fpe at 20 yards.

IMO you need around 6.0fpe at impact for a clean humane kill on small game(rabbit, squirrel).

You could hunt small game at close range with BB/Pellet guns such as the Crosman 2100 and Daisy 880.

Much better would be the Crosman, break barrel guns in the $100 range(Quest, Storm XT, Phantom)

    >>Pointed pellets<<

The domed pellets work best for hunting.

The Crosman Premier Domed Light is a good pellet for a reasonable price.

You can see what they have to say about hunting with your rifle.

  3. At close range (10-15 yards or less), with head shots or shots to vital organs it should have enough energy to kill squirrels, pigeons and other birds, and mice/rats. It would be borderline for rabbits and too weak for jackrabbits. If you decide to use this air-gun to hunt with make sure you use appropriate ammunition such as domed or pointed pellets to get maximum penetration and improve your odds of killing cleanly. Personally I'd recommend something a little more powerful for hunting, such as a Crosman 2100 or a Crosman Phantom 1000X, but if you don't have the money for one of those or simply want to use what you have, you should have the answer to the question you asked. However keep reading because there are some legal issues you need to consider.

With all that said, you need to check the Department of Natural Resources for your state before you go squirrel/small game hunting. In many states squirrels and rabbits (and some other small game species) generally require a hunting license to kill. Additionally some states, like Texas, prohibit the use of air-guns to hunt small game animals. In addition, you need to make sure it is legal to discharge an air-gun where you were thinking of hunting. Many cities/towns/villages have ordinances against discharging firearms and/or air-guns inside their limits. You can find out if it is legal to fire an air-gun in your neighborhood by asking your local police or sheriff's department.

With all that said, shoot safely and happy hunting.
