Question:

Will my German Shepherd eat a Shih-Tzu puppy?

We have a 6 month old *female* German Shepherd puppy, and are considering getting a Shih-Tzu. Our German Shepherd is friendly with other dogs, non-aggressive towards people and dogs, and shows no signs of having an issue. We've socialized her in a variety of settings including dog parks and neighborhood walks (run ins with kids, dogs, etc).

The size difference between the dogs (she's just over 50lbs now) is daunting, and we also would prefer to get another female. We've heard a lot of differing opinions on owning more than one female, so that's another consideration for us.

Anyone own both or have a similar big dog/small dog dynamic in their house?

  1. they should be good together.

  2. NO! In fact, my AmStaff used to be terrified of shih tzus! I used to have one, and my MIL has 3. :)

  3. I have a male chihuahua, a female Shih-tzu and a female  rottie. they all live together and play together.

  4. if you train it to then yes....

if you introduce it in a safe and secure way (always moniter for a good amount of time until your sure they are friends) if they become friends you olny have to worry bout them playing rough and accidently hurting one another

  5. only if it's very hungry.

  6. If they are raised together - you normally don't have a problem. Growing up. we had a German Shepherd and a min-pin at the same time for years(and min pins think they are 10 foot tall and bulletproof as well as being little terrors sometimes - with other dogs), and there was no incident. So with a more mellow dog like a Shih-Tzu. you should'nt have a problem - just socialize it like you did the Shepherd and I'm pretty sure you will be fine.

I owned two females as of late - one coonhound and the other a shepherd mix with no issues, along with a male coonhound (all fixed). The Shepherd mix was even a stray my mom brought home from outside a community hospital in the nearby town she worked in - but this Shepherd mix (she's the oldest) has always had a fantastic temprament toward other dogs anyway. So it was easy to bring another dog(s) home as she acts like mama dog anyway to everyone.

  7. This isn't necessarily a problem.  I know someone that has a great dane and a maltese.  He says she (the great dane) loves the little guy like he's her baby or something.  If she's well socialized, just keep a close eye on them when they are together at first.  Once they get used to each other, I would think things would be fine.

    Good luck.
