Question:

Will my ONKYO Receiver convert video to the monitor out?

I just ordered a new ONKYO TX-SR606 AV Receiver.

I want to connect all my HDMI and non-HDMI based components into the Receiver and output it to HDMI on my TV. That should work (of course).

I also want to connect a second TV and I want it to display exactly what is being displayed on the main TV. The seemingly simple solution is to split the HDMI signal into two and run the outputs into each TV.

But my second TV is too far away to do this (I'll go broke buying long HDMI cable and extenders, etc).

My solution for this problem is to connect the 2nd TV via the Monitor Out S-Video plug in the back of the receiver. But I am starting to think this won't work due to HDMI encryption and the functionality of the Receiver.

Can anyone tell me if this will or will not work? If it's a nogo, any ideas what to do that won't cost a fortune? (note: the other TV requires about 75 - 100 ft of wire to get to it).

Thanks - still learning...

  1. Well .... sort of. Your onkyo receiver will take your HDMI and non-HDMI components and output all HDMI. You knew that. That's the easy part. However, it will not take signals coming into the HDMI port and down-convert them to S-Video.

I don't know exactly what your price range is for this sort of thing, but I wouldn't expect an HDMI splitter, amplifier (yes you need to amplify it) and long cable to run more than $300 total dollars. I get all my parts and supplies wholesale, but MCM electronics is a very reasonable retailer for that sort of thing.

Please note that the example cable shown above has not be tested at 1080P resolutions. But let's face it, 1080i is light years ahead of S-Video in terms of picture quality.
