Will my ac to dc converter work in reverse?

I have a 110v ac to 12v dc @ 500ma converter and I thought I'd cut of the dc end and plug it into a cigerette lighter adapter, then into the car lighter and see what comes out the other end. I don't have a clue how to think about this and hope you can help. My wife says ask first cause she doesn't want the end product to be smoking wires!!! thanks

  1. No.

  2. No it will not work. There is a considerable difference between an AC to DC converter and a DC to AC inverter. However, small inverters that will plug into your car lighter are quire inexpensive, I have one that cost less than US$30 that will run my laptop computer.

Note that 12V @ 500mA is only 6watts so even if it did work in reverse  (which it won't) your converter would be of little use.
