Question:

Will my affectionate kitten become and affectionate cat?

I have had a lovely 4 month old ginger male kitten for 8 weeks> He is sooo affectionate - comes bounding up to me to say hello when I get home, falls asleep on my neck, shoulder, lap or just cuddles peacefully, purrs all the time, touches my face, occasional nose kisses, and when he's resting looks up at me and blinks sometimes now too. Amazing. And as a first time cat owner I'm just overjoyed!

My great fear about all this though is that he will get less affectionate when he becomes a cat. So many sources say that you should never go by kitten behaviour if you want a particular cat personality as you can't tell and suggest buying an adult cat if, e.g., you want a cuddler. Argh! Is this true? Is there anything I can do to ensure he stays this way?

Please only sensible answers! Thanks

  1. When my cat was a kitten, she was extremely affectionate; probably the most affectionate kitten I had ever met. She'll be a year old soon and she hasn't changed. She's still that same affectionate cat. She's always coming up to me and giving me kisses. She loves to cuddle, just like she did when she was a kitten. She's like a little dog-she follows me EVERYWHERE; just like she did when she was a kitten. In my experience, as long as you treat a kitten right, they will almost always become loving & affectionate adult cats. :)

  2. I have had many kittens over the years and you could tell from their kittenhood if they were going to be affectionate or not. It sounds like you have a little lover there and he will still be a lover to the people who reared him after he grows up.

Just avoid playing "hand games" with him where he gets to fight with your bare hand. He should always think of hands as instruments of love, not play.

Best wishes to you and your lovable little boy!

  3. When you were a little kid, did your parents accurately predict what you would be like as a teenager? adult?  Probably not.

A friendly kitten is more likely to become a friendly cat, but there are no guarantees.  Exposing your kitty to all sorts of things and experiences that are positive can help to keep him open to affection and interested in new things.

Ginger cats are notorious for being the most wonderful and doglike cats.  People who love ginger cats often will have no other.  Male gingers are particularly awesome, while female gingers are some of the most quirky cats I have met.

  4. We got a calico kitten that was so affectionate, almost exactly like yours, she's 3 now, and has the exact same personality! As long as you continue giving him lots of love and attention, I'm almost positive that he'll stay the same loving kitty! I wish you and your baby the best!
