I got one male in a 2 gallon with a filter and plants and marble type gems at the bottom! i dont have a heater but i have something to check the water temperture. i keep it at 78-80F all the time and feed it 2 pellets a day. hes very active but not making a bubble nest. i change the water every 3 weeks... will he live a long time in these conditions? Any tips? Something like giving him bloodworms which i dont, or getting a heater (but i keep it at 78-80F) I CANT GET A BIGGER TANK BUT IF IT WILL HELP PLEASE TELL ME!

  1. I kept my first betta in a gallon jar with 100% water changes every week. He lived just shy of 4 years.

Dont let that get out, because lots of folks on here would hate me for it ;) In my defense that was waaaaay before I knew they even made small aquariums.

Feed him more food, and change his water more frequently.

Clean water is the secret to a happy betta

  2. A 2 gallon is perfectly good but you might want increase the water change frequency to every other week as bettas are highly susceptible to fin rot when kept in dirty water.  You can also feed him a bit more, like 4-5 pellets a day while skipping a feeding once a week to avoid bloat and constipation.  It is a good idea to add other things into their diet beyond just pellets, bloodworms are pretty much a universial favorite along with brine shrimp.  Don't be afraid to experiement a little to see what he goes after.  Not all male bettas will build a bubblenest and this bares no indication on their overall health or happiness, its just something do.

It sounds like you take good care of your fish and want the best for him so he shoudl have a good life but there are no garuntees on life span.  Some bettas are hardy suckers that go for 4/5 years in cold dirty bowls and others are fragile enough to go belly up if the wind changes.  But you are on the right track in doing your best to ensure your betta has a long happy life.

  3. If you got him from a pet store...don't count on it. Bettas have a max of 5 years, by the time you get a pet store betta they're already about 1.5 years, this is to allow the fins to grow out so it looks like what the public expects to see.

  4. Your bettas fine, hopefully he will live a long healthy life. Yes you really should get him a bigger tank when you can afford it. They really thrive in larger tanks. Feeding him a variety of foods will keep him healthy.  They  love blood worms and brine shrimp, both are fairly inexspensive.

  5. 2 pellets a day your starvung him i feed mine once a day and give him like 5 or 6 there like a year now

  6. I usually say 2.5 gallon is minimum but 2 gallon is really pushing it. I hope when you are doing water changes that you are not doing complete water changes because the old water has beneficial bacteria

in it. You should be doing a 30% water change every 2 weeks. Bettas love bloodworms but only as treats because it's not nutritiously sound for them to eat daily, 2 times a week is good, other treats my bettas love are brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill, dapnia, fruit flys, baby crickets, and blanched peas for digestion.
