Question:

Will my car be covered by my insurance if I get into a car crash even though I don't have the tittle yet?

I received a 2004 Jeep Cherokee like 2 months back from this person who owed me money. The person who I received the vehicle to cover my loses from owns a car dealership and is yet to give me the tittle. I have been driving the car around with temporary plates that he keeps giving me every 15 days. I had a close call a few days back where I thought for sure the vehicle was going to be crashed and become a total loss. My concern is this will my insurace cover me if I get into a car accident and my car becomes a total loss? I do have full coverage on it. Does it matter that I dont have the Tittle?

  1. if your vehicle has full coverage on it you will be okay.  However if the vehicle is a total loss you will need to produce a title.

I would recommend you get in contact with your "friend" and demand the title.

  2. You will be covered.  The dealer however could be in trouble with the state for repeatedly issuing temporary tags, depending on the state regulations.  It is not uncommon for dealerships to have title problems for a number of reasons, so if it hasn't been too long (in NY it often takes over 2 months to get a title replaced, but we can only issue one 45 day temporary registration) I would get overly concerned.  I would ask for an explanation and get an iron clad bill of sale, which should suffice if you have to claim a loss on your insurance (Depending on your state's laws).

  3. I have met this kind of situation before, here is the place I found useful.http://carinsurance.expertsupport.info/a...

  4. If you have insurance on it, the car should be covered regardless of you having the title or not.

The other issue is that it is doubtful that you will ever get the title from this person.   Be careful.

  5. he gives you temp plates every 15 days?  something fishy is going on here...he is *so* playing you for some kind of sucker

  6. You don't say if you have any kind of paperwork other than the temp. registration, that makes your question difficult to answer. If you email me with more information I may be able to help you. Also, what State do you live in?

  7. As with all questions about insurance coverage,,,, talk with your agent and/or check your policy,,,,,,best source of information.

As long as you have a policy on the vehicle, and / or have this vehicle listed by VIN on your policy,,,, you are good.

The only possible problem, is that the insurance company / policy may decide that if you don't own the vehicle, you don't have an insurable interest in the vehicle.

If you are good with a bill of sale, or your current status as owner,,,the policy should respond.
