Will my car insurance skyrocket if I switch from a '97 to a '09?

I live in NYC so my car insurance is already astronomical. I drive a 97 Saturn right now and Im thinking of getting a Prius because of gas prices. Do you think my insurance will increase by a lot because of the difference in model and year? I know I could just get a quote but that's a process with my insurance company.

  1. Prius actual gas millage is in question right now after some independent  testing was done, you may want to do some more research on that car. You might be getting the same MPG in your Saturn.

  2. Well of course the insurance is going to go up for a newer model car, but I don't think it will increase dramatically.  If you have a good driving record, you should be fine.

It's probably a good idea to do your research before you buy the Prius just to make sure you can get an insurance rate that you are comfortable with.  I would call your current insurance company and ask them how much your rate will increase as well as compare 3-5 quotes online from different insurance companies to see who offers you the cheapest rate.  I found the site below really helpful when looking for the best auto insurance when I bought my new car.

    Good Luck! Hope this helped!

  3. It will go up some but not as much as you may think.  I drive a 98 GMC Sierra pickup truck and the insurance on it is only about $25 or so lower per month than my wife's '05 Chevy Tahoe.

  4. a new car in NYC???? your insurance will go up...big time...check it out before you buy.....

  5. If you have collision and comprehensive coverage your insurance will go WAY up,  as your old car had almost no book value while your new one will be valued at almost what you pay for it.  If you are leasing or borrowing to get your new wheels,  you will surely be required to have this coverage, even it you don't have it now.

Your liability coverage however, may actually cost less, depending on the experience of the insurer with drivers of that particular model.   Best bet is to shop around,  you'll probably find that Amica is by far the lowest cost, and incidently has the best claims service in my experience,  of any of the major companies.   If your driving record is poor however, or you have a few moving violations, they may not be willing to cover you.

  6. You really should do some research on your actual savings.  By the time you buy a new car and have a monthly payment and then have higher insurance (yes it will go up) you would have been better off with your saturn.  Economic researchers are stating that now is not the time to get yourself into a large debt.  As far as insurance, you can call any ins. and they will give you a quote, but its almost  certain that your ins. payment will go up.  Your driving record will determine how much.

  7. Try using http://My-InsuranceSearch.com to compare car insurance rates for all the major providers in your area for the 09 and compare.
