Question:

Will my cat kill my parakeets?

I have a ragdoll cat and 2 goldfish. The cat isnt interested in the goldfish, he's pretty laid back. I've been thinking about geting 2 parakeets, but my dad thinks the cat will kill them--just by looking at them. When the parakeets fly around, they will be locked in a room with no cat, but the birds will be in a cage in the morning room of the house. Will the parakeets literally be scared to death of the cat? Thanks for any help!!

  1. yes it will kill the birds .rag dolls are hunters.

  2. Well, I have a cat and bird.  Used to have a cat and mice.  The cat hasn't killed any of them yet.  You need to introduce your cat to the birds, let her sniff them--even with the birds out of the cage, so if a bird ever happens to get loose when the cat is around, it won't be a totally new experience.  If the cat tries to attack them, bat at them, or gets in a predatory attack pose, tell her NO firmly.  You just need to teach her that they are NOT toys or food.

I've only had my bird a little more than a week, and my cat was curious at first, peeking into the cage, but I'd tell her "no," and shoo her.  Then I gradually let her get closer and closer to him while he's out of the cage (telling her "no" when she gets too close), and she's barely interested anymore.  I'll take him out while she's napping in the same room and even when he suddenly flutters around, she'll just kinda open one eye then go back to sleep.  Just today, the bird was on his playstand on the coffee table and the cat hopped up on the coffee table, too.  I almost had a heart attack, but I just put one hand between my cat and the bird in case she decided to attack, and she just walked up to the perch, sniffed him, then walked past.

Bottom line: Birds and cats should not be loose in a room without supervision.  However, cats and birds are both intelligent creatures and can coexist peacefully.  You just need to teach your cat to leave the bird alone, and teach the birds to stay off the floor.

  3. By instint cats kill birds.

Why take the risk, don't get birds while having a cat.

  4. There is no way to know for sure what your cat will do, but keep in mind birds do stress really easily and if your cat is aggressive to the birds he will always be trying to find a way into that room. On the otherhand if your cat is more layed back he may not bother the birds...It mostly depends on your cats personality and you are the best judge of that!
