Question:

Will my cat remember her kittens?

My female had 4 kittens 9 weeks ago. One went to a friend - so she wont see that one again :( Two went next door (just over the fence) and we kept one with us.

A few questions please :

She keeps meowing like she used to do when she called them to come and feed. Will this stop? Will she be ok with it? Does she know that they have gone?

How do I get her my male kitten off her milk (she is only feeding him once a day if that) The vet said I cant have her spayed till she is dry - I dont really want to pull him off her everytime I catch them.

Once the 2 kittens next door start jumping up the fence and wandering around outside in a couple of weeks - will she remember them? Will they remember me, mum and her brother? Will they start coming back here?

Sorry it seems a bit much, Im still learning :(

  1. She will only stop meowing when her milk dries up.

You need to take the male kitten off her milk - 9 weeks is a little past the proper weaning age and if you let him, he could continue for a long time - and she will even go into heat again while nursing him.  (I had this happen with a rescued mother and kittens)  Keep them in separate rooms.  You can get a screen or something to put between the two so they can still see and smell each other... but stop letting him nurse!

She will not recognize the other kittens as her own babies once they take on new smells.  Cats don't recognize by sight, they identify each other by smell.  Once a few weeks has gone by, she will forget them.  That's a good thing, though... it's what allows momma to go on with her life without them and them without her!

  2. yea, they remember and they get will look for their kittens for a while but she will  get over it

  3. She keeps meowing like she used to do when she called them to come and feed?

    - I think this will stop, shes still properly got alot of milk left.

How do I get her my male kitten off her milk?

    - You should, keep them in a seperate room, so they are parted.

Once the 2 kittens next door start jumping up the fence and wandering around outside in a couple of weeks - will she remember them?

    - If its in a couple of weeks, she might really recognise them really, because they have different smells.

  4. no ... once gone they forget them. and her milk will dry up.

NOW IS THE TIME TO TAKE HER TO THE VET AND HAVE HER SPAYED.  Don't let her out so she breeds again!

Keep the kitten off her.  give her a place where she can jump up and avoid him... or loan him to a friend until she drys up and is spayed.
