Question:

Will my cat settle down after being spayed?

I have adopted/taken in a female cat. We have had her inside for about 2 months. She kept showing up on my patio. The first time she showed up she had 2 kittens but over the course of a week she weened them. She kept showing up after the kittens were gone and always starved. She started coming in for minutes then hours at a time. We decided to take her in. We have taken her to the vet and had her guessimated at a year old. Now I am really wondering, she is adjusting to being inside pretty well. We are sure to play with her alot and have set up little things for her to climb in and thengs for her to investigate. We dont want to her to get too bored. But she goes in and out of heat alot and sits at our glass door and looks out. It's so sad looking. Like she is missing out on something important. Like getting pregnant. LOL...Friends have said she will calm down after she is spayed and not whine and cry and want out so much then. Is that true? We are getting her spayed after next week. We have her booster shot left to go then she will be spayed. And we plan on letting her outside so she can roam. She just seems so caged in sometimes pacing and sitting in at our two doors seeming to beg "let me out". Will she be a happier inside cat after spaying? Any info is appreciated. Hope I got my question across.

  1. YES!!! Spay your cat!  Female cats can be in heat almost constantly, and when they are, they are restless, very vocal, and will do almost anything to get outside and mate. PS - Cats can be very content being indoors only, and it sounds like you have plenty of things to keep her occupied.  Good for you for doing the right thing.

  2. When a female cat is in heat they tend to yowl a lot and want out.  It kinda drives you nuts.  My daughter got a stray cat from my parents and after we had her spayed she really did calm down a lot.  At first my daughter was the only person who could hold her and pet her.  She would never let me touch her.  But after having her spayed she is so much more pleasant.  She even comes up to me so I'll pet her.

You can't go wrong with spaying your cat.  You'll be glad you did.

  3. She should be happier indoors after being spayed.  Her natural urge to breed- keeps calling her to the outdoors.  Once she is spayed that should ease up.  I can also pass along advice that I got years ago from a very dear older male client.  I asked if his cat went outside- he stated NO- outdoor cats live shorter lives and increase the amount of money I have to pay to my vet.

    Words to live by.

  4. Yes. Declawed and spayed for inside cat.

  5. YES! it usually will, trust me i have 11 cats...

  6. getting her spayed wont change her behavior that much, but if she misses being oustide so much, just let her be an outside and indoor cat. if your worried about her getting lost, you could get her a cat leash or something like that

  7. She should be happier once she's spayed.

My girl was estimated at 4 years and has had at least two litters. She hasn't wanted back out since we brought her in.  She was only just spayed, we had to wait because she showed up pregnant, then one refused to be weened, then she was in heat...

It's still too soon to tell if she'll be more calm but her adult son became much less interested in the outside after he was neutered.  (none of mine are allowed out)

I still would not let her out.  Even though she'll be fixed she'll probably go right back to doing whatever she used to do, just not getting pregnant.  I had an indoor/outdoor cat in college and even after I got him neutered he didn't change his routine at all and kept leaving for long periods and getting in fights.  Only keeping him inside kept him safe.  After a period of whining about it he got over it and has been a happy indoor cat for the last 7 years.

If you can build an outdoor enclosure for her that could be nice, but she really doesn't need to be outside.  She just needs to get used to being inside.  You did a wonderful thing by taking her in, she's just not used to being spoiled quite yet.
