Question:

Will my cat try to hurt it?

My cat is four years old and I love him. I wanna get a girl kitten, but I'm afraid that since my cat is very territorial that he might hurt it. My parents said that he'll probably beat it up a little but I'm scared that he might do more. What do you think? I mean he might act differently since it's a female and a kitten.

  1. I don't think so. Even if shes territorial.

  2. Getting a cat to acclimate to a newcomer is NOT an easy job, but can be done.  You have to be willng to put in a lot of work, though, and have the room to do it safely.   If you DO decide to get a kitten, you'll have to make sure they can be kept in different rooms at all times that they are not totally supervised.   Tricks to help acclimation include catnip, treats for the older kitty, lots of attention and praise for the older kitty, and helping adapt smells.  (I.e., rub down the older male cat with a towel, then use the same towel to rub down the kitten, transferring the familiar smell to the kitten).   You can also make a point of referring to the kitten as belonging to the older cat.  Not knowing his name, for example, "This is Tomcat's kitten.  Look at Tomcat's baby," etc.  That way the older cat is always referenced in conjunction with the "baby".  Also, be sure to not push the older cat away when he comes for attention in favor of the baby.  This goes a LONG way in fostering acceptance.    It's a long slow road and takes patience, but it can be done.  Males are fairly accepting of females, but you have to do your part to ensure safety at all times until that acceptance comes to pass.

  3. I've introduced cats to each other before; there's been hissing, growling, and the occasional swat, but never hurt each other.

After a couple of days of being angry, your cat will probably get over it.   Some cats take a little longer to come around.  Just make sure they're both fixed so don't end up with a bunch more kittens!

**Just wanted to add:  My male cats were much more tolerant of female kittens than males.  A little protective, even.  They stil hissed for the first few days though.

  4. your cat will get jelous that you have brought another cat into his house his territory and this will lead to vilonce towards the kitten your best bet is to slowly introduse the 2 cats and get them used to each other but if that dosent work then youll have to choose between old cat and new 1 and because your cat has been alone with you for 4 years it will very unliklie he will except another cat into his and your life you left it too late sorry

    good luck tho!

  5. FIRST IS YOUR CAT NEUTERED... if not then that is the first thing to do...

2nd. if you get a female kitten he will try to bully it but will be happier than with a male.

You are going to have to watch him and make sure he doesn't get too rough with the young one.

Then MAKE SURE  AROUND 6 MONTHS  get the female spayed.

Going to the animal shelter where they spay/ neuter is a great place to get a new pet.

    good luck
