Question:

Will my cats be okay if I'm gone for six weeks?

My husband and I have the opportunity to go on the trip of a lifetime. We will be gone for six weeks. Unfortunately, that means leaving my two cats at home. We have many willing friends who have offered to check on the cats once a day while we are gone but I get sick to my stomach if I think what might happen to them while we are away. A cattery is not an option. The cats are adult (four and five years old) and used to their environment. I am feeling guilty about leaving them for so long, but my husband has worked very hard for four years so that we could have this trip. :-(

  1. Make sure they are fed, checked for ticks and fleas, given attention, getting their litter boxes clean and let out for atleast and hour.

  2. Yes, your cats will be OK.....they will miss you.  Arrange to have more than one person caring for the cats, just in case someone needs backup.

When I'm away, I have my cat sitter call me daily from the phone in my home.  It's very reassuring to know that all is well.  Email works too!

Good Luck and have a wonderful trip!

  3. Shelly P.'s answer is the best overall. I can understand your unease at leaving your cats for six weeks but if you are going to do that and a kennel is not an option, then it would really be best if you can find someone who can stay at your place while you're gone.

No matter what option you pick, please make sure the cat sitter knows the vet's name, your vet is aware that someone other than you will be looking after your cats and, perhaps most crucially, your contact information in case your cat sitter needs to get a hold of you.

Enjoy your trip of a lifetime!

  4. Why is a cattery not an option?. These are the best places if you are going to be away for many weeks. This way you'll know that they are being looked after properly and they'll get lots of love and attention - not just for a few minutes a day if friends come in to look after them. Also if you cats get ill they can be given medical attention right away and not left till someone comes in. So if you're that worried about them i'd reconsider the cattery option.

  5. As long as u have someone to come over and change their water, feed them, and clean litter box, they will be fine.  I know how you feel though.

  6. They'll be alright if someone checks in on them once a day..

If possible, find someone you trust who would stay AT your house with the cats.. That would be ideal.

But as long as someone checks in on them every day.. The

DEFINITELY I hope they are strictly indoor or can be kept indoor while you're gone.. Cats tend to wander more if their people are gone..

Kitties will be alright as long as you clear the house of major hazzards... have someone check in on them once a day.. and have neighbors who can watch the house for any problems..
