i am headed to mexico on a cruise in a few weeks and i havent thought about this issue but realize that its every important for me to know this.

of course i am going for a vacation, but it is important for me to keep in touch with a few business contacts several times a day and i need to know if my cell phone will work both in open waters and at the ports of call.

my service carrier is verizon, my phone is a motorola Q..

what services and phones if not mines, allow for hassle free cell phone communication?

  1. I just returned from the mexican rivera (Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan)

The only place that Nextel would work was in Puerto Vallarta.  However another passenger had Cingular and she had the international calls added to her phone, if you have the international calls added to your plan, you should be able to receive calls.

  2. Cingular is best to reach you in mnore ports although you will have blackout periods.  The best way to stay in touch is through e-mail.  You will have access to internet on the ship as well as on the Islands  Ship to shore phone calls by sattelite are WAY too expensive - don't rely on those for business.

    Have fun!

  3. I returned from a cruise to Mexico at the end of October. While on the ship you will not be able to use your cell nor will you be able to receive any calls. They crew also ask that you refrain from using any two-way radios for they might interfer with the ship's navigational systems.

Besides there's so much for you to do, you won't want to talk. But, if you have to you can set-up an internet account (connection is slower).

  4. i am not really sure but i would think not since there are no cell phone towers around but i am not sure if the cruise ship would have a antenna or tower on board so they will work. but you might want to check with verizon to see if you have coverage in those areas.

you might want to call the cruise line an ask them your question

  5. i dont think it will. i work in the gulf and the only phone that i know of working out there is cingular because they have a deal with petro com. petro com is who has the offshore towers.

  6. We cruised to Mexico and our cell that should work all over the world did not, so don't count on it.  It worked when we were approaching port in Florida.
