Question:

Will my checks be honored at stores???

I recently wrote a check to a company, but had to put a stop on it. Well, the company tried running the check once, but my bank denied it. After that, I forgot about it. Well, I received a collections letter from Check Velocity, asking for the amount I wrote the check for, plus some fees. They said they also reported me to the National Check Network. I got scared, so I paid it all right away via credit card.

When I shop, I always pay by check. I've never bounced. Will this dilemma show on chex systems or telecheck? Do you think I will still be able to pay by check at stores?

Thanks for your help.

  1. Try it and see.  There are so many checks being bounced these days that a single incident shouldn't cause any problem.

  2. in all honesty..you have defaulted once...who would want to accept your checks anymore?  You said it yourself...that you have already been reported....

  3. Why did you have to put a stop on it?  Keep in mind that what you did is a felony in Florida, and it's similar in every other state.  It's good that you paid off the debt, and it's doesn't seem that you have been reported.  But the only way to know for sure is to contact the collection agency and ask them.  If they have, see if they can remove it, and get it in writing.

You could be placed on a bad check writer's blacklist called SCAN, or the Shared Check Authorization Network.  If your account is on this blacklist, your checks may no longer be welcome at merchants that subscribe to their list.  Merchants that subscribe to this list usually place a SCAN sticker next to the credit card stickers at the registers or their front doors.

SCAN reports also show up on ChexSystems reports.  If you would like to know what is in your ChexSystems report, visit www.consumerdebit.com.

To see if you have a Telecheck report, go to www.telecheck.com, and click on Consumer Information.
