Will my children understand my goals of higher education?>?

My son is 12 and will be in eighth grade in the fall, my daughter is 6 and is going into first.

Do you think they will understand the sacrifice of my time with them to complete a bachelors degree?

Will this experience show them the value of higher education or will it harden them against continuing in school for their own future benefit?

Please only responses from personal experience. Thanks :0)

  1. they don't.

  2. Both my children are now teenager and know the importance of finishing high school and getting into college.  They both are trying very hard and are pretty cool kids.  I just started going to college for my Associates and they are very proud of my desition.  They always ask me if I need help with anything.  I do give them my essays to proof read whenever I have a chance.  They feel so important and proud that they can help me with my work.

Because your children are still young, you can do your work with them and spend some quality time with them and explain how important it is to stay in school and finish their career.  Tell them how happy your are in going back to school and make it exiting for them.

My children who are 14 and 15 years old, they both drop me off with their father and sometimes spend some time in the college library or cafeteria.  They love going to college with me.

Best of luck to you and your children.

  3. I will say this... you are the very best example to your children.  And also remind them on occasion of your sacrifice to make life better for them and that they should respect you for all that you do for them.  Don't harp... ask them what they think about your sacrifices... reinforce, reinforce... I told my 5 year old son that he had to work hard everyday in school because I could not afford to send him to college and that he had to get a scholarship... it worked... he also has his masters in business and is a Director of a major world wide Insurance company.  He is 34 years old and makes me very proud... my daughter has 3degrees.. business,RN and education ( I over did it with her) and my other son is a Firefighter with a business degree.... but he is doing what he loves.  My kids listened to a gentle voice...

  4. I dont think they will get it yet. My mom tried and tried to tell me to take certain courses and tried to instill what a good education could to do for me, but unfortunatly I didnt understand really until I was in my last year of high school. I still went to university the next year but didnt get into the one I wanted or the program I wanted. I wanted to take nursing but because I didnt take chemistry or grade 12 math in high school I couldnt. Im 21 now and wished I would've listened to my mom. Now if I want to take nursing I'm going to have to go take summer classes and get my math and chem.

  5. Yes, they will. But you have to spend a bit of time with them telling them about you are learning. You can do your assignment together with your kids who are doing their assignments. This can also be another form of quality time.
